Summary:

         It was Leah's tenth birthday when the red rose box arrived.  It was the nicest thing to come through their dusty little southern town.  The box contains two tickets to California among other lavish things.  These two tickets are tickets out of segregation and the dreaded Jim Crow Laws.  Leah and those that accompany her, Ruth her sister, Gramma, and Elijah, think this is the trip of a lifetime.  Well, it is.  While visiting Leah's aunt Olivia, the sender of the tickets, a disaster hits home killing Leah and Ruth's parents along with other town members.  An escape from Jim Crow becomes a life saving opportunity.  Now the two sisters must adjust to free life in California.  Is this what freedom really feels like? A life with no momma or daddy?

This touching story is set in a time not too long ago.  It can be used as supplementary literature when teaching about Jim Crow Laws.  It has accurate details and shows what life was like back in "the olden days".
