Big-Enough Anna
Author: Pam Flowers with Ann Dixon

Publisher: Alaska Northwest Books, Anchorage, 2003

Themes: dogsledding, sled dogs, Arctic travel, snow

Primary Characters: Anna, Pam Flowers

Summary:
Poor Anna was the smallest pup out of her litter.  Pam was to take these new puppies out on an important journey if they could handle it.  Pam was a dog sledder who planned to be the first woman to traverse the Arctic alone on dog sled.  Other people said Anna was too small to be part of the team.  But she tried harder and pulled longer than any other dog on the team.  The day came when the team and Pam would leave on their journey.  AS usual, Anna was in the back with the rest of the young and inexperienced pups.  However, Pam noticed her enthusiasm and how kept the line tight.  Pam gave Anna an opportunity to be lead.  Did Anna overcome her size and become a great lead dog?  You have to read this story to find out.  And the best part is that...it is a true story.
This book would be great to read in the winter or when talking about non-fiction.  The students can create newspaper articles or their own autobiography after reading a few similar stories.  Above all this story is just a touching case about overcoming obstacles.
